How does a book club = action?
If you’ve never been part of a book club, you may find yourself wondering how something as simple as a group of people reading the same book and then discussing it could do anything to make a difference in the world.
However; the beauty is in this very simplicity!
At the very foundation, a book club is intended to present the same information to different people in order to elicit discussion, sharing of opinions, and connection. Book clubs can also:
Push you to finish (Great when you’ve got stacks of books all around and lack the motivation to complete them).
Decrease stress
Boost teamwork skills
Improve active listening
Help you to fine tune your writing skills
If any of the bullet points above resonate with you, we’d love to invite you to join the Ethos Kolekto book club! We meet 4 times a year, and you can sign up for one season or sign up for all of them. The group gets to vote on the book for each season, but themes revolve around things like refugee experience, women in the world, non-profit action, and more. At the end of each discussion, we talk about action steps that we can take as individuals, as a group, and within our family/friend groups to create positive change on the planet. To date, book club has inspired Ethos Kolekto to start making micro-loans (we’ve made 3 since last spring), to increase our empathy when communicating with others, and to volunteer.
As you can see, something as basic as reading a book as a small group of like-minded individuals can create ripples of positive change.
