Why is education so important?

It’s likely that if you’ve made your way to this page, education is something that you care about. Especially if we are talking about education in developing nations (which we are). But if you just so happened to stumble onto this blog post by some sort of internet magic, we thought we’d share a few stats and facts about why education is integral in moving the world forward in a positive way.

When you listen to or read the news these days, it’s easy to come away feeling like the world is going to end. Doom scrolling is now officially a thing, but guess what?

It doesn’t have to be!

Living through the COVID 19 pandemic has been epic for showing the world where deficits in infrastructure, but at Ethos Kolekto, we are looking at these facts with optimism instead of fear. Finding the problem is the first step in solving the problem!

According to the United Nations, here’s what we know about education:

Now that schools are re-opening with plans to solve pitfalls in infrastructure, students of all ages are able to advance themselves in ways that were not possible before. This is important because for years now, education has been proven as a way to reduce poverty. According to The Borgen Project and UNESCO, global poverty could be halved if all adults (something like 420 million people) received a secondary education. Our first book club meeting taught our group that education can also reduce child marriages, delay marriage, delay having children, and reduce the number of children that women have, which leads to less population and women who are healthier overall. The Human Journey says that empowerment for girls and women is key for equality and that educating girls is an essential starting point for this equality to be reached.

Also according to The Borgen Project, education reduces violence and war, prevents child trafficking, reduces child labor, and improves world health. Providing equitable education to children and adults with disabilities also reduces inequalities and makes it possible for people with exceptionalities to gain job training and make a dignified living, despite their challenges.

When people with disabilities are employed in the workforce and there is more universal access to the workforce for all, the local economy gains a boost, is more diversified, and helps the global economy to flourish.

Building schools, staffing them with well-trained teachers, providing schools with essential learning tools, and truly educating all, regardless of income, race, religion, or socioeconomic status is a way to make positive changes in the world. Education reduces some of the world’s most intense issues while building boost in equality, empowerment, and economy.

If you agree, we would be honored if you shopped with us this month. As always, 100% of sales proceeds will be given away and since August is back-to-school month, Ethos Kolekto will be giving profits to UNICEF to aid the work they are doing to bring education to all across the globe!
