When you realize that of all the many things being made and sold across the globe on a daily basis, you have the power to purchase products that make a tangible difference to the lives of women on the other side of the world, you have the amazing ability to put an enormous positivity into the world. Just by making a thoughtful purchase, you are using your dollars to put food on the table, to send kids to school, and to bring medical care to people in need.

The Women’s Initiative International is a Rwanda-based organization on a mission to help women escape from the bonds of poverty. Founded in 2018 in the Nyabisindu area of Kigali, Rwanda, a group of 15 women and a dedicated director worked together to handcraft jewelry, accessories, and home goods. The sale of these products provides the women with dignified employment and the ability to be creative and express that creativity with finished products. Today, the pioneer class of artisans have all graduated from their training and are full-fledged partners in the business. Their wages are fair and enable them to live above the poverty level.

Some of our favorites from the shop are the Equinox Brass Necklace, the Crustacean Basket, and their handmade makeup bags. The Equinox Brass Necklace is a gorgeous piece, featuring a curved half circle, made from brass, and embellished with a black stone, giving it a unique texture. It is understated, but still makes a statement and is able to add a worldly touch to an everyday outfit. The Crustacean Basket is another fun, textured piece. It was handwoven using locally-grown sisal fibers that are dyed and designed into gorgeous patterns. This particular basket features a soft ivory with deep orange accents and an oceanic feeling. The Coleus Makeup Bag features a colorful African print, is lined with vinyl to make cleanup for any spills easy, and has sweet handmade ball accents around the handle.
